💔 When Inclusion Gets Left Off the Guest List: A Wedding Story That Sparked Outrage
At AbilityClassifieds.com.au, we’re more than just a platform for disability-friendly classifieds, we’re a community that champions inclusion, accessibility,
and respect for every Australian living with disability. So when a story surfaced online about a bride asking her wheelchair-using sister to “hide the chair” for wedding photos, it hit close to home.
The story, originally shared on Reddit, came from a 27-year-old woman who has used a wheelchair since she was 19.
Her older sister, 29, is getting married next autumn and asked her to be a bridesmaid. But what should have been a joyful moment quickly turned sour.
The bride, planning a “vintage garden party” themed wedding, asked her sister if she could “find a way not to use the wheelchair that day.” Her reason?
The chair would “distract” from the aesthetic she was going for in the photos.
“I thought I misheard,” the sister wrote. “But she said she didn’t want my chair in the photos because it would ‘distract’ from the look she was going for.
I told her that was impossible, and honestly insulting.”
The sister stood her ground, saying if her presence in a wheelchair was so embarrassing, she wouldn’t attend the wedding at all.
The fallout divided the family, her mum supported her decision, while her dad called her “dramatic,” insisting it was “just one day.”
But here in Australia, we know it’s never just one day.
Requests like these reflect a deeper issue: when disability is treated as an inconvenience or a visual problem, rather than a part of someone’s identity.
It’s a form of ableism that’s all too familiar, and it’s why AbilityClassifieds.com.au exists.
We’re here to promote visibility, dignity, and opportunity for Australians with disability.
Whether you’re looking for accessible housing, inclusive events, adaptive gear, or simply a space where your story is respected, we’ve built this platform for you.
This wedding story isn’t just about a single event. It’s a reminder that inclusion must be intentional, not optional.
And that every person, regardless of mobility, appearance, or ability, deserves to be celebrated, not hidden.
